Amazon Fulfillment Center (FC) Practice Test

The action that most directly reduces travel time in a large FC is arranging where items are stored so that the most frequently accessed items are closest to the areas where pickers and packers work, and along the common travel routes. This is slotting: placing items by demand, size, handling needs, and flow so picks move shorter distances, encounter fewer bottlenecks, and overall traffic is smoother. By organizing the warehouse so high-velocity items live near packing/shipping zones and along direct paths, workers and robots spend less time walking or driving between locations, which cuts travel time and improves throughput.

Increasing dock doors can help with receiving and outbound processes but doesn’t directly shorten the internal travel distance within the warehouse. Increasing packaging size generally adds handling time and space, not reduces travel. Removing labeling requirements would raise risk of errors and cause more time spent scanning, checking, and correcting, not cut travel time.

So, proper slotting directly targets the path that travel time takes through the process, making it the most effective choice.
